1st PFMR Open meeting at Al Quds University

The 1st PFMR Open meeting was held at Al Quds University on Saturday the 15th of October .

The meeting started with opening remarks by Dr. Nouar Qutob, an Assistant Professor at Alquds-Bard and the Vice Presient of PFMR, who introduced the PFMR vision to support all those involved in basic, clinical and scientific research. She discussed the challenges faced by the Palestinian community which were the motives behind establishing PFMR.  She also gave a brief about the two conferences the PFMR held in the Palestine Polytechnic University and An-Najah University. Dr Qutob ended her remarks by inviting the attendees to share their input and ideas on initiatives and events to achieve the goals of the forum.

This was followed by  a lecture entitled ‘Clinical Molecular Genetics in Palestine; Scientific Collaboration and Clinical Applications’    by Professor Hisham Darwish,  Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Al Quds University.  Professor Darwish talked about alpha and beta-thalassemias, osteoporosis, FMF, colon cancer, tyrosenemia, recurrent abortion and genetic factors, diabetes. He also discussed some challenges facing biomedical research in Palestine.

The excitement continued with a lecture entitled ‘Population Genomics of Hearing Loss in the Palestinian Population: A Model for Genetic Heterogeneity’ by Professor Moein Kanaan,  Professor of Genetics at Bethlehem University. Dr Kanaan talked about  the Population Genomics of Hearing Loss in the Palestinian Population and shared some data obtained from his work on breast cancer and congenital heart diseases in Palestine.

Following the lectures, Dr Rami Aqeilan, President of PFMR, briefed the attendees on the progress made by PFMR so far, and stressed the importance of a collaborative effort between the members to reach the desired outcome.  Dr Jawad Al Zeer then gave a brief report about the financial status of the forum.

The floor was opened for the attendees to share their ideas and inputs on the ways to improve networking and efficient communication among members as well as future activities of and steps towards achieving the PFMR objectives.

The discussion was fruitful with many suggestions. The attendees suggested an introduction of a member fee that will be used towards future workshops and activities. They also stressed on the necessity of  promoting the use of the PFMR website to strengthen the relationships between researchers and the board members encouraged them to use the website to share their ideas and suggestions for future activities.

The attendees also agreed on the need to put pressure on the national institutes to support biomedical research by approaching the decision makers in these institutes.

At the end of the meeting, three committees of 5 members each were formed, a scientific committee, an outreach committee and a student committee.  Each committee has a set of missions to achieve and together, they will reach the objectives of the forum as a whole.

The meeting ended by concluding remarks by Dr. Rami Aqeilan and Dr. Nouar Qutob, who thanked the attendees for their enthusiasm and loyalty and stressed on the importance of building collaborations between the many PFMR members.
