A successful microbiology workshop at Caritas Baby Hospital (CBH)

In collaboration with the Palestinian Forum for Medical Research (PFMR) Caritas Baby hospital hosted a diagnostic microbiology workshop on Saturday the 5th of May 2012.  The workshop agenda included diagnosing the drug resistant bacteria such as MRSA, VRE, Extremely drug resistant Acinetobacter, and the bacteria geniusescarrying the blaKPC and blaNDM genes.  The workshop focused on these isolates due to the existence of these strains in the Palestinians hospitals.  Twenty two medical technologists from 20 Palestinian hospitals participated in the workshop.  The participants were from different districts including Tulkarem, Jenin, Nablus, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Hebron.

Dr. Musa Hindiyeh, the director of Caritas Baby Hospital and a founding member of PFMR welcomed everyone and delivered a lecture onthe most sensitive and cost effective ways to detect these pathogens.  In addition, Dr. Hindiyeh emphasized the importance role that the hospital infection control committee can play in reducing the spread of these pathogens in a given hospital setting.  In addition, he emphasized the important role that the lab personnel can play in detecting these pathogens in a timely manner in order to isolate the infected or colonized patients.

In order to solidify the discussed theme, Ms. Randa Kattan, a Medical Technologist at Caritas Baby Hospital, led a practical diagnostic microbiology laboratory during the second part of the workshop.  Ms. Kattan presentedto the participants samples of plates that were inoculated with the different organisms.  In addition, she showed the participants the most sensitive and cost effective ways to perform these tests.

The recommendations that came out from the workshop were the establishment of a network between the labs to share information and resources to identify resistant pathogens in the Palestinian hospitals and to address the issue of antibiotic misuse by the physicians.
